
West Hollywood is a comparatively new city located within the Greater Los Angeles area of Los Angeles County. The City was incorporated on November 29, 1984, and is situated east of the Hollywood District of Los Angeles, west of Beverly Hills, south of the Fairfax District of Los Angeles and bordered on the north by the Santa Monica Mountains.

Through the 1930s and into the late 1950s, the district known as West Hollywood was well-known as a favorite spot for movie stars, the well-heeled, and celebrities in general, primarily due to the many extravagant night clubs and restaurants located along the section of the Sunset Strip that was out of the Los Angeles City limits. Such famed clubs as Ciro's, the Mocambo, the Trocadero and the Garden of Allah were night spots where movie stars could be seen most any night.
West Hollywood government officials have strived to maintain a high quality of life for its residents with an active Social Services Division that subsidizes agencies that institute helpful programs for the city's growing population of children and its senior citizens.

Many landmark 1920's Spanish Revival and Art Deco apartment buildings, the work of famed architects, can be found around Havenhurst Drive and Fountain and Harper Avenues, in what is referred to as the Historic District.
West Hollywood 's reputation as a “fun city” is enhanced each October 31 st, when the city stages what is boasted of as the largest street party in the country, the West Hollywood Halloween Carnival. And it is large! Stretching from La Cienega Boulevard (east) to Doheny Drive and the border of Beverly Hills (west), the Carnival's attendance has annually ranged from an estimated 350,000 to over 500,000.
West Hollywood's well regarded school system is served by five elementary schools, Bancroft and John Burroughs middle schools, Fairfax and Hollywood high schools, and several private schools.
